Officials have issued a Flex Alert for California
Flex Your Power wants you to spread the word. Ya dig?
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hilly Kristal, the founder of New York punk rock club CBGB, which helped make the Ramones, Blondie and Talking Heads stars, has died at age 75, his daughter said on Wednesday.
Kristal died on Tuesday from complications of lung cancer, his daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman, said.
He founded the club in 1973 hoping to showcase country music, calling it CBGB & OMFUG, for "Country, Bluegrass, Blues and Other Music For Uplifting Gourmandizers."
But the club drew few country acts and instead became a breeding ground for punk rock, playing host to the likes of Patti Smith, Television, Living Color as well as countless local hopefuls that never made it to the big time.

It's the end of time, at least as far as AT&T is concerned.
The brief note in customers' bills hardly does justice to the momentousness of the decision. "Service withdrawal," it blandly declares. "Effective September 2007, Time of Day information service will be discontinued."
What that means is that people throughout Southern California will no longer be able to call 853-1212 to hear a woman's recorded voice state that "at the tone, Pacific Daylight Time will be . . ." with the recording automatically updating at 10-second intervals. (Via L.A. Times.)

Crayola Total Tools Audio Ruler measures out loud! This talking tool measures in quarter inch increments up to one foot with a thin line of disappearing ink. The ink helps to ensure that the measurement is what you wanted. Choose to hear the accurate measurement or a silly nonsensical measurement just for fun! I'm just curious how newlyweds would use it on their honeymoons. Could be a bummer.

When the space shuttle Discovery launches the STS-120 astronaut crew in October, the force will be with them.
Stowed on-board the orbiter, in addition to a new module for the International Space Station, will be the original prop lightsaber used by actor Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in the 1977 film "Star Wars". The laser-like Jedi weapon is being flown to the orbiting outpost and back in honor of the 30th anniversary of director George Lucas' franchise. (Via Space.com.)

Some of the jewels of Latin American cinema—an industry stretching back to the silent era that has produced thousands of commercial and art-house films and a galaxy of stars virtually unknown outside the Spanish-speaking world—will be celebrated at LACMA on the occasion of the exhibition The Arts in Latin America, 1492–1820.
Anyone who knows me knows that my ass loves french fries or as I prefer to call them freedom fries. But, this shit is nuts. At last week's Restaurant Expo Fryworks demonstrated a machine that turns Potato flakes (see picture) into french fries almost instantaneously. That's some serious 2 a.m. in the morning going through the drive-thru drunk off your ass instant artery clogging insanity there. So, where can I get some. To see the video click here. “Yo Gabba Gabba!” features brightly colored characters, a cool soundtrack of moral lessons set to hip-hop beats and focus on a recurring art segment whose host is a man who gives his name only as Mark, according to the New York Times reporter Dave Itzkoff.
That "Mark" is Devo's lead man Mark Mothersbaugh, who has been busy scoring and composing for soundtracks, films and TV for years
“Yo Gabba Gabba!” will have its debut on Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr. programming block and sibling channel Noggin on Aug. 20th.
The New York Times reports that children and grown-ups alike can listen to the original song titled “It’s O.K., Try Again” performed by the indie-rock group the Shins, learn a dance called the Electric Eel from the country music duo Sugarland, or learn beatboxing skills with hip-hop artists like Rahzel and Biz Markie.

In a move that jolted local movie fans, Landmark Theatres announced that it will close the doors of South Pasadena's historic Rialto Theatre on Aug. 20.
That means fans of the 80- year-old film palace have through Sunday to enjoy its balcony seating and decorous interiors one last time, that is while being subjected to screenings of “The Simpsons Movie.”
“The theater has been operating at a loss for some time. We love being in South Pasadena and we love the Rialto, so therefore we have been delaying the inevitable for quite some time,” Landmark Chief Operating Officer Ted Mundorff wrote in an emailed reply to questions. “We have a long-term lease in the theater so it will remain under our control for a long period of time. We have been and continue to look at all uses for this building.” (Via Pasadena Weekly)
I always thought I remembered seeing a skid row bar called The Hard Rock Cafe when I was a little kid in downtown L.A. but I never thought about it again until now. Here's a little story about it.
Henry Diltz was a photographer that was photographing the Doors for the upcoming album 'Morrison Hotel'.Though the shoot produced what would become a memorable album cover, the events that followed proved even more fateful.
"Jim said, 'Let's go get a drink,'" recalled Diltz.
The group drove to Skid Row, where they spotted a place called the Hard Rock Cafe. "It was a little wino bar on the corner," said Diltz.
Diltz said the band spent an hour drinking inside, while he took photos. A shot of the exterior of the bar, with a sign bearing its name, ended up on the back of the album cover. After the record was released, Diltz says the Doors got a call from a man in London who wanted to use the Hard Rock Cafe name for a restaurant he was opening. The business grew into the now famous international chain of music-themed restaurants. A Hard Rock Cafe spokesperson said Diltz's account is the most common explanation for the origin of the restaurant's name, though he added that other stories are floating around.
The Hard Rock Cafe on Skid Row is long gone. The Hard Rock Café had been there since the ‘30s, so it didn’t have anything to do with hard rock music. Hard rock mining probably, or “a rock and a hard place.”Read the story here.
Original location of the bar here.

Fans from Europe, Asia, Australia, South America — and even from exotic locales like Kansas — are spending their hard-earned money for T-shirts, coffee mugs, salt and pepper shakers, refrigerator magnets and other trinkets during the events commemorating his death 30 years ago. The heat led to the death of a fan from New Jersey, a 67-year-old woman. The Memphis Fire Department said it also treated at least six people overcome by heat, including an 8-year-old boy who was hospitalized. (Via AP.)

The Eco Media Player windup system means that you never need to worry about running out of power or wasting environmentally harmful batteries. One minute of winding gives up to 40 minutes of play time so it’s ideal for the beach or long weekends in the country - you can even use it to charge your mobile phone in an emergency!
Alternatively, you can still charge the media player conventionally through the USB port of your computer.
Someone needs to buy this for me so my lazy ass doesn't have to go and buy batteries anymore. But, then someone will have to wind it up for my lazy ass too.
Jenny Lewis on the show called Pancake Mountain. The show is based out of Washington D.C. and sometimes has on rock bands that play to little kids that join them on stage. The White Stripes were recently on the show and were interviewed by Rufus Leaking who is a stuffed goat that interviews the bands in a somewhat sarcastic way. Rufus had better watch out before Jack White beats his little goat ass just like he beat the shit out of the singer from the Von Bondies.

She now faces up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. According to the Washington Post, Sejas was celebrating her 19th birthday with her boyfriend when two police officers arrived. (Via iFilm)
SensorfreshQ confirms the freshness of uncooked meat or poultry in less than a minute! This small, food freshness tester 'sniffs' the air above meat and poultry, detecting bacteria-produced gasses and determining meat freshness. Over 2,000 air samples are taken in less than a minute, and the results are color-coded for easy recognition. The green light indicates fresh food, yellow means the food is still ok - but eat fast! A red light indicates that the uncooked meat or poultry has spoiled. I wonder if I can use it on my nalgas.

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that after more than a year and 260 episodes, 16-year old Bree was killed off by the religious cult that had chased her for the life-giving qualities of her rare blood type. This video marked the end of season one which was played out in 12 videos posted over a 12-hour period exclusively on MySpaceTV and the LonelyGirl15 website. Although Bree will no longer be a part of the show, the next season will be starting next week with the same title and remaining characters. You can check out the new episodes by visiting her myspace channel.
This is an ad caricature of Ed Roth for Revell Models. There is a little paint missing on the frame border also a small scratch on the lower left hand corner. There are some small discolorations on his nose, a small scratch underside of the nose and on the hat. This is a great piece of Ed Roth memorabilia to add to your collection. There is a small plaque that is missing on the bottom of the frame, not sure what it said. The sticker says" Revell Authentic Kits". It is a little dirty and could use a cleaning for display. It is for sale on ebay.
